Why Wool is Amazing for Cloth Nappies
Wool is the only nappy cover that both absorbs and waterproofs. It’s naturally resilient — able to bend or stretch over 30,000 times without breaking — and can extend up to one-third of its length before springing back into shape.
Its unique fibre structure allows it to absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture, then release it into the air, keeping baby dry without trapping wee inside a plastic cover. Wool feels dry to touch yet still repels water.
As a natural insulator, wool keeps baby’s body temperature stable in both hot and cold weather. The tiny air pockets in the fibres prevent overheating and help reduce the risk of heat rashes. It also naturally repels dirt.
Lanolin is the key to wool’s performance. Through an amazing natural chemical process, the lanolin reacts with urine to neutralise acids and deodorise the fabric while maintaining its waterproofing ability. It coats the fibres, helping them repel water yet stay breathable.
Wool covers only need washing every few weeks or when they start to smell, lose efficiency, or become soiled. Simply air on a rack each morning if used overnight.
We recommend solid lanolin (available through SHP) or Lansinoh nipple cream from pharmacies — both are therapeutic grade, though ours offers the same quality at a lower cost. The soak method gives the most thorough result, especially for heavy wetters and overnight use — and it’s the easiest of processes.
Full lanolising instructions are provided with every wool cover purchase, so you can maintain peak performance with ease and confidence.
